Reflection Seismics

It is a method of exploration geophysics that uses the principles of seismology to estimate the properties of the subsurface of the Earth based on the reflection of seismic waves. This method requires the use of a controlled seismic source of energy, such as a hammer or an explosive.

When determining the time a reflected wave takes to reach a receiver, it is possible to estimate the depth of the structure that generated the reflection.

This is a method used extensively in the exploration for hydrocarbons (oil, natural gas) and other mineral resources such as coal, metallic minerals and geothermal energy. It is still used in basic studies on the nature and origin of the rocks that make up Earth's crust.

In engineering seismic reflection can be used in structural studies, environmental studies and groundwater.
